LiveU's Multi-Camera Solution Takes Center Stage for Accidental Theatre Dynamic Live Content

Belfast-based non-traditional arts space Accidental Theatre turned to LiveU to open up new creative opportunities and revenue streams

The Challenge

Accidental Theatre began in 2011 as a touring arts company and quickly evolved into converting venues into performance spaces. Prior to the pandemic, the theater had been setup for live streaming but only a few low-key shows a month. When the pandemic suddenly shuttered in-person events, Accidental Theatre needed to immediately expand their live-streaming options not just in-house but on a larger scale. External requests within the theater community grew with venues and outside spaces also needing to go live. Accidental Theatre needed a solution that would be high-quality, reliable, and accessible in multiple locations internally and for their clients.

The Solution

Accidental Theatre was able to significantly expand its live streaming capabilities with LiveU. Richard Lavery, the theater's Artistic Director, and his team created a small control room and editing space in the theater and two small studios. LiveU's LU800 production level-field unit was at the core of the live streaming setup, connected to three PTZ cameras that were controlled on site and remotely. A Blackmagic Atem production system and audio interface were also used to take the mix into one of the camera feeds, which then came back to a LiveU server in the control room for final mix and distribution.

"

"The reliability of the LiveU technology is a huge benefit. That’s the number one priority for us. The LU800 has a fantastic balance between quality and reliability and the quality is way higher than even I was expecting. The LU800 is absolutely rock-solid so we can generate really high-quality streams. We do think of what we’re doing as an entirely new platform. It’s not going to replace in-theatre performances, of course, but it’s going to make our work much more accessible across the country. We see a whole range of new possibilities."

“The LU800 and its multi-camera capabilities changed the way we looked at this and accelerated our move to remote production. Before we deployed this remote production system, we had to manage and arrange schedules for our crew, including travel time. That greatly reduced the time available to both our production crew and management team. LiveU’s remote production solution makes our lives much easier and at the end of the day we can make more, and even better, content.
