Emerson College School of Communication students gain hands-on experience
The Challenge
The Boston-based higher education institution is ranked among the top schools in the country for its Journalism program. In order to remain competitive, the school wanted to offer its students practical experiences covering breaking news, politics, sports, entertainment and other popular beats. Live hits are a crucial part of the coursework and cannot be learned solely in the classroom.
The Solution
The department augmented its curriculum with the integration of live broadcast technology from LiveU inside and outside the classroom. The Presidential Inauguration was the first deployment of the technology, and then the school took it to Super Bowl media week, where students were able to live stream the pre-event press conferences featuring interviews with New England Patriots Quarterback, Tom Brady and Half-time Performer, Lady Gaga to YouTube.

"
"You can’t get better experience than using the real tools to cover real-life news. Students learned quickly that ‘this was not a drill.’ You have hard deadlines, an online audience and public onlookers watching you deliver real news. Students were able to deliver live shots and make the content look like we used satellite or microwave trucks to produce it."
